Am I menopausing?
Do you have symptoms?
The ‘Change’. The Big ‘M’. No matter how many cute terms are made up to describe it, women who have gone through menopause know there is nothing remotely cute about it.
Menopause is define as the time when your menstruation stops for good. It is a natural part of aging and happens when your ovaries stop producing the female hormone – estrogens. The time between the start of menopausal symptoms and when your menstruation eventually stops is called perimenopause. During perimenopause, the ovaries function erratically. This stage lasts about four years on average and differs for each individual. Let’s look at the symptoms that are pointing to the perimenopause stage.
Irregular bleeding
Your menstruation period is now longer or shorter and the flow is heavier or lighter. Your menstruation cycle also becomes more unpredictable so much so you need to bring along sanitary pads all the time.
Hot flashes and night sweats
You feel sudden sensations of warmth or intense heat that spreads over various parts of the body. Normally it follows by a chill. Sometimes at night, your PJs are all wet from sweating.
Vaginal dryness and urinary problem
“No honey, I don’t feel like it tonight” sounds very familiar? You just don’t have the mood and in fact sometimes it feels painful. Other times, you couldn’t hold in your urge to urinate.
Mood Change
You get upset for no reason. You just yell at your cat, in fact when you want to point out to your children how unsatisfied you are with them, you find that they just fled them room in lightning speed mode.
Weight Gain
You eat normally, but suddenly your favourite dress is getting tighter especially at the waist line. The reading on the weight machine is showing a climbing trend.
If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, it is advisable to seek an answer as to whether you are entering into perimenopause. Although there is nothing you can do to stop this natural process, but having the answer in hand will help you to deal with it and to allow people around you to understand what you are going through.
Go to how to test to explore your option in getting to the root of the symptoms.
How to test?
The onset of perimenopause is caused by changes in the levels of hormones in the female body that regulate the menstrual cycle. As the body produces less and less estrogen, it increases its production of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), which normally regulates the development of a female’s eggs. Therefore, testing for FSH can help determine whether a woman is in the perimenopause stage. The BioTest Menopause Test Kit is a one step test to detect the presence of FSH in urine.
You can purchase the BioTest Menopause Test Kit from the local pharmacy or through online stores. It is meant to be tested at home at your own privacy and at whenever you feel you want to. The results is almost instantaneous.
When to test? It is best to test during the week of your menstruation cycle. Say if Day 1 is the start of your period, test it between Day 2 – Day 7.
It’s Easy
Just pee on the test and wait for the result.
It’s Fast
The result will show in minutes. In fact, result shouldn’t be read after 10 minutes. There is no need to wait hours or days for the lab report.
It’s Reliable
The test is highly accurate. In fact, even if you walk into a physician’s clinic, the same test is being used to detect FSH.
More questions
Q How does the test work?
A As your body ages and produces less estrogen, FSH level increase as the hormone tries to stimulate the ovaries to produce a healthy egg. This test measures FSH and can tell you whether your body is producing excess FSH as a result of low estrogen levels, signaling that your body is in the perimenopause stage.
Q When can I use the test?
A We recommend performing the test using first morning urine as it contains the most hormone and will give the most accurate result. If you are still menstruating, we recommend testing during the first week of your cycle and then retesting one week later.
Q I received a positive result. Can I stop using contraception?
A No, this test cannot determine fertility. Continue using contraception until your test results have been confirmed by your doctor.
Q I am not sure that I held the test in my urine stream long enough. Will I still get an accurate result?
A In order to receive an accurate result, you should hold the Absorbent Tip of the test in your urine stream for at least 10 seconds and wait 3 minutes to read the result. If the line in the control window (C) fails to develop, you should repeat with a new test.
Q How accurate is the test?
A In laboratory studies, the test was show to be more than 98% accurate overall.
Q How will I know the test worked?
A The appearance of a red line in the control window (C) tells you that your followed the test procedure properly and the proper amount of urine was absorbed. If you do not see a line in the control window (C), you should review the procedure and repeat with a new test. The test is not reusable.
Q Why should I bother to find out the result if I can’t stop it from happening?
A Well, for one, you should take charge of your own body. Knowing the reason why your body reacted the way it did will help you to managed it. For example, you can begin to change your lifestyle, eat more healthily and exercise more. There are also plenty of supplements and herbs that could help to balance the hormones and help you to ease through the phase.
In addition, with the onset of Menopause, the risk of osteoporosis and heart diseases will begin to increase many folds too. That is a very good reason for you to find the answer and understand the next phase of your life.
